Welcome to Namsos municipality
It's a pleasure to wish you welcome to Namsos - the city by the river Namsen. Namsos is the largest city in the region of Namdalen. The municipality reaches from sea to mountains and we believe that everyone who visit us will find Namsos to be a nice place.
Namsos is located in Namdalen in Nord-Troendelag , 200 kilometers north of Trondheim and 75 kilometers north of Steinkjer. The surface area of Namsos municipality is 804 square kilometers. By 01.01.13 Namsos has about 13 000 inhabitants. Neighbouring municipalities is Namdalseid, Steinkjer, Overhalla, Fosnes and Flatanger.
Namsos was founded in 1845 and became a municipality in 1855. In 1954 Namsos was merged with Vemundvik, Klinga and part of Otteroey municipality.
The woods surrounding Namdalen, and the coastal access through the Namsenfjord, has made lumber important resourse to the region/the city. The first sawmill was established in 1853.Today the only one of the historical sawmills in operation is Moelven Van Severen. There is an old sawmill museum located at Spillum.
The city of Namsos has been destroyed three times: The first time, in 1872, when two boys playing with matches caused a fire, destroying 80 % of the buildings in the city. The next time, in 1897, when a fire started in a house by the sea for unknown reason. Only 20 houses and 2 sawmills remained. The third time was in 1940, when Namsos was bombed by German bombers.
